The previous occasions on which I’ve noticed a cluster of the great and the good sharing a birthday have mainly centred on little cohorts of writers, or people in the movies. Today there’s a variation on this theme as my attention was drawn not only to the number of eminent women who share a birthday, but how many of them excelled in sport too. Their diverse backgrounds include a former world champion heptathlete from Ukraine, the subject of a portrait of a holocaust survivor I saw in an exhibition recently and who is now 95 years old, and the youngest ever winner of a professional golf event aged 14 and the professional number 1 by the time she was 17. Raise your glasses to celebrate these exceptional women.
